A lot of people ask what our route is. In fact, that’s probably the most frequently asked question!
The plan has been brewing on for about two years and is still tentative. First, we will ride down the West Coast of the U.S. Then we will make a beeline for the East Coast through the states of Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, and on to Georgia. After riding up the East Coast we’ll fly (or boat, possibly) from New York to Portugal.
Once in Portugal we will ride south for a quick side trip into Morocco, then back up through Spain and into France to catch a peek at the Tour de France as it rolls through. In August we will tour the British Isles. Then we’ll ride down through the Alps and Austria for a side trip to Italy. Are you feeling the rhythm of the ride yet? This is not a crow’s flight, it’s a jagged path.
We will spend the next few months riding through Slovenia, Croatia, Greece, Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Egypt and possibly more of northern Africa. Doubling back, we will ride up through Turkey again and into Armenia, Georgia, Russia, and Kazakhstan around the Caspian Sea and traversing rough roads into Kyrgyzstan. Over the high mountains our route will take us into far western China on the Karakoram through Northern Pakistan and on into Kashmir. If things are unstable in Pakistan our alternate route will run through Kazakhstan into Mongolia, then south through Tibet and Nepal.
From there we will continue on to the Servi Domini Orphanage in Palayamkottai near the southern tip of the subcontinent. We plan to lend a hand at the orphanage for a month or so.
After our visit we will ride north again into or around Burma into Thailand. There we may take a brief respite. Another southern side trip may ensue. Regardless, the plan is to ride up through Laos and China and catch a boat ride to Japan. Once there, we both intend to explore the country (thoroughly!) before our flight back to Washington state.
