…I stay inside with them, not able to comprehend that my tent and sleeping bag were more than adequately warm and comfortable. For fear of being mistaken as ungrateful, I conceded each time, but honestly would have slept better outside.

Laos

Laos, among my cycling friends, has a great reputation, and therefore rather than cross the 230 kilometers of country by bus to get back to Xinjiang as soon as possible, I opted to pass through on my bike. It is said that the experience of visiting Laos is probably similar that of visiting Thailand as it was 50 years ago.

The Karakoram Highway

Our beds in the spartan Traffic Hotel cost the equivalent of $2 for each of us, and we made the choice to stay an extra day in hopes that my symptoms would improve. Due to the lack of heating in our grim “hotel,” they didn’t noticeably subside.
